On Wednesday, June 25, 2025, President Bola Tinubu extended congratulations to Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on his 60th birthday, praising his alignment with the transformative master plan initiated during Tinubu’s governorship from 1999 to 2007. In a statement issued by presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga in Abuja, Tinubu commended Sanwo-Olu, the sixth democratically elected governor of Lagos, for key achievements like the completion of the Blue and Red Rail lines and preparations for the Purple Line serving the Lekki corridor. Tinubu urged Sanwo-Olu to prioritize impactful projects, specifically the Fourth Mainland Bridge and the Freedom Way to Victoria Garden City (VGC) Road, to sustain Lagos’s development trajectory. He wished Sanwo-Olu good health, longevity, and continued service to Lagos and Nigeria.
Sanwo-Olu, mentored by Tinubu, rose through roles such as Managing Director of the Lagos State Property Development Corporation and commissioner for economic planning and budget, commerce and industry, and establishments, training, and pensions. Posts on X, like @NGRPresident and @ARISEtv, echoed Tinubu’s praise for Sanwo-Olu’s execution of Lagos’s master plan, while @TENIBEGILOJU202 highlighted tensions among some supporters over perceived slights by Tinubu since the 2023 Obasa saga. Sanwo-Olu’s tenure has faced scrutiny, notably over the 2022 murder of Oluwabamise Ayanwola by BRT driver Andrew Ominnikoron, sentenced to death on May 2, 2025, for her murder and the rape of others. Bamise’s family, via elder sister Onapemipo Damilola, demanded the arrest of Ominnikoron’s accomplices, referenced in Bamise’s voice notes, and criticized the police for not recovering her phone, which could hold clues (Punch, May 3, 2025). No compensation was offered by the state, per Damilola.
