On Friday, July 25, 2025, Dr. Adetokunbo Pearse, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Lagos State and former member of the Atiku Abubakar 2023 Presidential Campaign Committee, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the successful 101st National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held in Abuja on Thursday demonstrates the PDP’s robust health. Pearse, convener of the Reset Lagos PDP group, hailed the NEC’s decision to zone the 2027 presidential ticket to the South and schedule the Elective National Convention for November 15–16, 2025, in Ibadan, Oyo State, as strategic moves to reclaim political dominance. He described the PDP as a well-founded democratic institution, dismissing defections to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) by figures like former Vice President Atiku Abubakar as misguided, predicting their return upon realizing the ADC’s electoral weakness.
Pearse criticized Atiku’s political judgment, arguing that while he may secure the ADC’s 2027 presidential ticket, he cannot win the general election, damaging his legacy by “jumping ship.” He emphasized that Atiku’s exit would not weaken the PDP, which he sees as the only viable opposition to defeat President Bola Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC). The NEC’s resolutions, including legal action to reclaim defected lawmakers’ seats and efforts to reintegrate returning members, reflect the party’s unity and readiness, Pearse noted, aligning with sentiments on X from users like @PDPVanguard on July 24, 2025, celebrating the PDP’s renewed momentum under acting National Chairman Ambassador Iliya Damagum.
