Dangote Refinery Takes Delivery of 2,000 CNG Trucks, Set for Nationwide Fuel Distribution

On Friday, August 1, 2025, Vanguard reported that the Dangote Petroleum Refinery has received over 2,000 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)-powered trucks, with additional deliveries expected to reach a total of 4,000 trucks, as part of a ₦720 billion initiative to revolutionize Nigeria’s fuel distribution starting August 15, 2025. The 650,000 barrels-per-day refinery in Lekki, Lagos, aims to supply 65 million liters of refined products daily—45 million liters of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), 15 million liters of diesel, and 5 million liters of aviation fuel—directly to filling stations, manufacturers, telecom firms, and aviation companies, bypassing traditional marketers. This move, supported by over 100 CNG daughter booster stations, is projected to save ₦1.7 trillion annually by absorbing ₦1.07 trillion in logistics costs, previously estimated at ₦45 per liter, per Dangote Industries Limited.

The initiative aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, promoting cleaner energy through CNG trucks, which are 40% cheaper to operate than diesel trucks, and is expected to benefit 42 million MSMEs by reducing energy costs, per Nairametrics. Despite concerns from the Petroleum Products Retail Outlets Owners Association of Nigeria (PETROAN) about potential job losses among local traders, the Presidency and IPMAN have praised the move for curbing smuggling and stabilizing prices, with PMS at ₦970 per liter post-subsidy removal, per Reuters. X posts from @DangoteGroup on July 26, 2025, highlighted the trucks’ arrival, while @BusinessDayNG noted public optimism for lower fuel prices but cautioned about market consolidation risks. The refinery’s credit facility, offering 500,000 liters on credit for bulk buyers with bank guarantees, aims to enhance accessibility, supporting economic recovery and rural fuel access.
