Edo Governor Okpebholo Pledges Education Investment, APC Intensifies Campaign for By-Elections

BENIN CITY – On Sunday, August 10, 2025, Edo State Governor Sen. Monday Okpebholo emphasized his administration’s focus on education to drive socio-economic and intellectual development, announcing plans to revive the College of Education in Igueben, Edo Central Senatorial District, during an All Progressives Congress (APC) campaign tour for the August 16 by-elections, as reported by Vanguard. Speaking across Wards 4, 7, 8, Uzea, and Ebele Kingdoms, Okpebholo highlighted a ₦1 billion bursary scheme for Edo indigenes in tertiary institutions and promised attention to all state-owned higher institutions. He welcomed defectors from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), including former Speaker Rt. Hon. Friday Itula, boosting APC’s momentum in Okpoju Ward 4, per The Sun.

Meanwhile, Deputy Governor Hon. Dennis Idahosa led the APC’s campaign for the Ovia Federal Constituency House of Representatives by-election in Ovia South West, describing it as a critical test for the party’s 2027 preparedness. Idahosa urged mobilization for a “100 percent win” for APC candidate Omosede Igbinedion, the only female contender, noting Governor Okpebholo’s infrastructure projects, including the ongoing rehabilitation of the 22-km Ekenwan Road (Leadership). Igbinedion praised Idahosa’s grassroots efforts and appealed for continued support to drive development. The by-elections, filling seats vacated by Okpebholo and Idahosa, follow APC’s 2024 governorship victory with 617,887 registered voters across Edo Central and Ovia (INEC). X posts from @APCWatchNG (August 10, 2025) highlighted Okpebholo’s education focus, while @EdoVanguard criticized PDP’s Joe Okojie for weak campaign traction, predicting an APC sweep amid PDP’s internal divisions.
