EFCC Grants Former Sokoto Governor Tambuwal Bail Amid N189 Billion Fraud Probe

On Tuesday, August 12, 2025, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) granted administrative bail to former Sokoto State Governor and current Senator, Aminu Tambuwal, following his interrogation over allegations of fraudulently withdrawing ₦189 billion during his 2015–2023 tenure, as reported by Vanguard and Pulse Nigeria. Tambuwal, a former Speaker of the House of Representatives, honored an EFCC invitation on Monday, arriving at the agency’s Abuja headquarters at 11:16 AM. A senior EFCC official, speaking anonymously, confirmed that Tambuwal provided the required information and was released after meeting bail conditions, though his passport remains withheld, indicating an ongoing investigation into violations of the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022, per The Sun.

The EFCC’s spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, confirmed the development but declined further comment. The probe has sparked political controversy, with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and the Sokoto PDP alleging it’s a targeted move by the Tinubu administration to weaken opposition, per New Telegraph. Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi, reacting on X (@PeterObi, August 12, 2025), criticized the EFCC, urging a transparent anti-corruption fight guided by the rule of law, not political motives, stating, “The public must be convinced that the rules are even and not arbitrarily selected.” X posts from @SaharaReporters and @PDPNigeria echoed concerns of selective prosecution, while @APCWatchNG defended the EFCC, citing Tambuwal’s 2024 asset declaration of ₦1.2 billion as questionable. The case, involving alleged withdrawals from Sokoto’s state accounts, could impact Tambuwal’s role in the opposition coalition ahead of 2027, per Legit.ng
