LAGOS – On Tuesday, August 12, 2025, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Lagos State Council, led by Chairperson Funmi Sessi, hailed the Dangote Petroleum Refinery as a transformative national asset during a tour of the 650,000 barrels-per-day facility and Dangote Fertiliser Limited, as reported by Vanguard and The Sun. Sessi praised the refinery’s role in bridging Nigeria’s fuel supply gap, stabilizing petrol prices, and creating jobs, noting its potential to serve West Africa with exports already underway. She credited the refinery’s market entry with reducing Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) prices from ₦1,200 to ₦970 per liter post-subsidy removal in 2023, per NNPC data, and highlighted its 2,000 CNG trucks for distribution, set to expand to 4,000 by September 2025, saving ₦1.7 trillion annually (Nairametrics).
Sessi urged the Federal Government to prioritize selling crude oil to Dangote in naira, arguing that dollar-based transactions or imports undermine cost reductions, given Nigeria’s 1.4 million barrels-per-day crude output (OPEC, 2024). She compared the refinery’s impact to Dangote Cement’s role in spurring competition, predicting more private refineries from players like BUA. The NLC also commended Dangote’s training of Nigerian engineers, with 1,500 employed at the refinery, many now working globally (BusinessDay). X posts from @NLCOfficial (August 12, 2025) echoed Sessi’s call for naira-based crude sales, while @Naija_Activist criticized the government’s dollar policy, citing public frustration over fuel prices. Sessi emphasized Aliko Dangote’s patriotism, urging sustained focus on staff welfare and economic growth.
