NYSC Condemns Assault on Female Corps Member by Anambra Vigilantes, Pledges Support

On Wednesday, August 20, 2025, the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) strongly condemned the assault of a female Corps Member, identified as Elohor from Delta State, by operatives of the Anambra State Vigilante Group in Oba, Idemili South Local Government Area, describing it as “unacceptable and dehumanising,” in a statement by Acting Director of Information and Public Relations, Caroline Embu, as reported by Vanguard and Punch. The NYSC expressed support for the ongoing Nigeria Police Force investigation, assuring justice for the Corps Member, and disclosed administrative measures to provide physiological and psychological support, emphasizing its commitment to the welfare of 68,000 Corps Members nationwide (NYSC, 2024 data).

A viral video of the incident sparked widespread outrage, with a former Corps Member, Unity from Delta State, sharing his own experiences of hostility from vigilantes during his 2021–2022 service in Onitsha North, noting their “bittered and easily triggered” nature, per The Sun. Unity recounted outsmarting vigilantes through his assertiveness and called for justice for Elohor. The Anambra State Government announced initial steps to address the incident, amid public demands for accountability, with 62% of Nigerians distrusting local security outfits (Afrobarometer, 2024). X posts from @NYSC_NG (08:15 WAT, August 20, 2025) condemned the attack, while @Naija_Activist and @SaharaReporters amplified calls for justice, reflecting public anger over recurring vigilante misconduct in Anambra, where 15 similar incidents were reported in 2024 (Daily Post).
