On Wednesday, August 20, 2025, the National Working Committee (NWC) of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) held a strategic meeting at its National Secretariat in Abuja with Zonal Vice-Chairmen and State Chairmen to reposition the party as Nigeria’s most credible alternative political platform ahead of the 2027 general elections, as reported by Vanguard and Leadership.ng. Presided over by Acting National Chairman Dr. Sadiq Umar Abubakar Gombe, the meeting included key figures like Deputy National Chairman (South) Senator Ugochukwu Uba, National Secretary Dr. Olu Agunloye, and National Publicity Secretary Araba Rufus Aiyenigba, among others. The session, led by Lagos State Chairman Hon. Femi Olaniyi (Ferrari), focused on mobilizing members and galvanizing nationwide support for electoral success, per a statement by Aiyenigba (The Sun).
The SDP, which secured 0.3% of votes in the 2023 presidential election (INEC), aims to restore public hope through issue-based politics and credible leadership, addressing issues like the 38.9% poverty rate and 43% distrust in political parties (NBS, Afrobarometer, 2024). The party plans to expand its 4% national grassroots penetration through youth and women-focused initiatives (ThisDay). X posts from @SDPNigeria (August 20, 2025) highlighted the meeting’s unity focus, while @Naija_Activist questioned the SDP’s viability against the APC’s 68% dominance, urging broader coalitions. The meeting signals SDP’s intent to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress and fragmented opposition like the PDP and ADC in 2027.
