Trump Considers New Sanctions on Russia After Unprecedented Aerial Attack on Ukraine

Following what Ukraine has called Russia’s largest-ever aerial assault, U.S. President Donald Trump has stated he’s prepared to impose additional sanctions on Moscow. The attack, which occurred on Sunday, saw a barrage of missiles and drones rain down across Ukraine, with the capital Kyiv’s government offices being hit for the first time in the three-and-a-half-year conflict. The assault killed four people and caused widespread damage, including to high-rise buildings and an equestrian club. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has since called for a “strong” response from the U.S., while European leaders have also condemned the attack, with French President Emmanuel Macron saying Russia is “locking itself ever deeper into the logic of war and terror.”

The attack comes despite a recent meeting between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin on August 15, which failed to achieve a breakthrough on a ceasefire. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has indicated that potential new measures could include tariffs on countries that purchase Russian oil, a move aimed at causing the “full collapse” of the Russian economy to force Putin to the negotiating table.
