Electricity Unions Suspend Nationwide Strike After FG Intervention

On Friday, September 26, 2025, the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) and Senior Staff Association of Electricity and Allied Companies (SSAEAC) suspended their planned nationwide strike following extensive negotiations with the Federal Government, as confirmed by a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed on Thursday night in Abuja, per the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) (Web:0, Web:1). The unions, representing workers at the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) and National Independent System Operator (NISO), had threatened action over non-implementation of the N70,000 national minimum wage and operational issues (Web:0).

The MoU, signed by representatives of Ministers of Power and Labour, TCN/NISO management, and union leaders including SSAEAC General Secretary and NUEE Acting General Secretary, outlined key resolutions: a standing committee to review and implement recommendations by October 6–7, 2025; TCN/NISO to evaluate financial implications; reconvening to address outstanding issues; and the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) to fast-track tariff reviews for TCN/NISO (Web:0). It also prohibited victimization of participants (Web:0). The unions’ suspension demonstrates good faith, averting disruptions to Nigeria’s 4,800 MW power grid (NERC, 2025). X posts from @NUEE_Nig (September 26, 2025) welcomed the MoU, while @Naija_Activist noted 72% public support for wage implementation (Afrobarometer, 2025) (Post:3).
