On Tuesday, July 22, 2025, Mr. Adamu Garba, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and former presidential aspirant, appeared on Channels Television’s Politics Today, cautioning President Bola Tinubu about sycophants within his inner circle who are misleading him by falsely claiming stability in Nigeria and the APC. Garba highlighted a disconnect between the country’s realities and the reports reaching the president, stating, “People are telling him that things are okay – things are not okay.” He linked the APC’s vulnerabilities to the controversial resignation of former national chairman Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje and the rise of an opposition coalition under the African Democratic Congress (ADC), describing its members, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Mr. Peter Obi, as “vultures” exploiting the APC’s weaknesses. Garba urged the party to appoint a truthful leader open to criticism to counter the ADC’s threat ahead of the 2027 elections.
Garba further noted the APC’s declining influence in northern Nigeria following former President Muhammadu Buhari’s exit from power in 2023 and his death on July 13, 2025. He pointed out that Buhari’s famed 12 million northern bloc votes had dwindled to 5.5 million in the 2023 election, yet the APC won due to strategic structures. With Buhari’s absence, Garba stressed the need to “re-engineer” strategies to retain northern support, warning that the ADC’s growing traction, evidenced by defections from both the APC and PDP, poses a significant challenge. He called for sincere leadership to address internal party tensions and maintain the APC’s dominance, emphasizing that sycophancy could cost the party dearly if unchecked.
