APC Rejects One-Party State Narrative, Welcomes Defectors – Felix Morka

On Thursday, May 15, 2025, the National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Felix Morka, dismissed claims that the ruling party seeks to transform Nigeria into a one-party state despite recent defections from opposition parties. Speaking in Abuja, Morka argued that the APC’s openness to defectors from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Labour Party reflects their desire to align with the ruling party’s vision, not an attempt to monopolize power.

Morka referenced the PDP’s dominance during its 16-year rule, when it controlled over 28 states without accusations of enforcing a one-party system. “There’s nothing wrong with PDP and Labour Party members defecting to the APC if they want to identify with our processes,” he stated, emphasizing that Nigeria’s Constitution, Electoral Act, and legal framework ensure a multi-party, pluralist democracy. “We cannot desire to go against the Constitution,” he added, noting that creating a one-party state would require near-impossible legal changes.

Addressing concerns about the APC’s growing influence, Morka clarified that the party’s focus is on strengthening itself, not eliminating competition. “The APC only worries about how to protect itself,” he said, rejecting the one-party narrative as baseless. The statement comes amid high-profile defections, including PDP chieftains like former Senate President Bukola Saraki and ex-Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, fueling speculation about the APC’s intentions. Posts on X reflect mixed sentiments, with some users praising the APC’s inclusivity and others warning of a creeping one-party dominance, citing the PDP’s historical precedent.
