Former Enugu Deputy Speaker Ikechukwu Ezeugwu Quits PDP, Cites “Deceitocracy”

Dr. Ikechukwu Ezeugwu, the immediate past Deputy Speaker of the Enugu State House of Assembly, announced his resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Sunday, May 18, 2025. In a letter addressed to the PDP Chairman of Udunedum Ward in Udenu Local Government Area, Ezeugwu accused the party of deliberate wrongdoings, labeling its operations in Enugu State as “Deceitocracy.” He highlighted the 2023 general election candidate selection process as a breaking point, claiming the party leadership selfishly chose candidates, ignored merit, and promoted mediocrity and deceit.

Ezeugwu criticized the PDP for sidelining vibrant first-time assembly members and aspirants, who were misled into funding constituency projects and campaigns with false promises of candidacy. He noted that these individuals were abandoned when they needed support, while party leaders allegedly courted candidates from other parties for national office. Describing the experience as “deeply depressing,” Ezeugwu said he faced economic suppression and political ridicule but persevered. He emphasized that the betrayal of trust, especially towards members who viewed leaders as fathers, made it impossible to remain in the party, concluding with the term “DECEITOCRACY” to underscore his disillusionment.
