Minister of Works, Senator Dave Umahi, announced on Tuesday, May 20, 2025, that a section of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway is nearing completion and will be tolled starting in December 2025. Speaking in an interview for a State House documentary marking President Bola Tinubu’s second anniversary, Umahi revealed that 30 kilometers of Section 1, a six-lane, concrete-paved highway, have been completed, with an additional 10 kilometers in Section 2 on track. He highlighted the project’s features, including solar-powered lighting, CCTV infrastructure, and carbon credit benefits, projecting a 10-year return on investment. Umahi described the highway as an economic corridor driving regional growth.
The minister also noted that Sections 3 and 3B, totaling 65 kilometers across 38 kilometers in Cross River State and 27 kilometers in Akwa Ibom, were recently flagged off, with host communities expressing enthusiasm for the transformative impact. On the Sokoto-Badagry superhighway, Umahi stated that President Tinubu is reviving a colonial-era Trans-Saharan trade route vision. Additionally, he claimed that all South-East governors are supporting Tinubu’s re-election in 2027 and revealed plans for a summit to unite South-East leaders, including Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi, to endorse Tinubu’s candidacy.
