Lagos Labour Party Confident of Victory in July 12 Local Government Elections

The Lagos State chapter of the Labour Party (LP) expressed confidence in securing victory in the upcoming July 12, 2025, local government elections, provided the polls are conducted fairly. In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday, May 18, 2025, LP Deputy Chairman Olusupo Ajayi highlighted the party’s strong performance in the 2023 presidential election, where it garnered the highest votes in Lagos, as a basis for optimism. He announced that 26 chairmanship candidates from the Julius Abure-led faction emerged from peaceful delegate-based primaries held on Friday across 26 local councils.

Ajayi emphasized the party’s commitment to a rigorous campaign to win the chairmanship elections across Lagos’ 57 Local Government Areas and Local Council Development Areas, as set by the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC). Describing the election as a grassroots opportunity, he said the LP aims to deliver positive change despite competing against the ruling party. The party plans to mobilize voters lawfully and engage communities to promote people-centered governance, with the goal of restoring public trust in politics.

Urging LASIEC Chairperson Justice Bola Okikiolu-Ighile to ensure free, fair, and peaceful elections, Ajayi stressed the importance of integrity for her legacy. “We will all return to dust. What we leave behind is goodwill for our children,” he said, appealing for a transparent electoral process to uphold public confidence.
