The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has criticized the All Progressives Congress (APC) following a disruptive brawl at the APC’s North-East Consultative Meeting in Gombe State on Saturday, June 14, 2025. The incident highlighted deep divisions within the ruling party, particularly over speculations that President Bola Tinubu may not retain Vice President Kashim Shettima as his running mate for the 2027 elections. Speaking in Abuja on Tuesday, June 17, 2025, PDP Deputy National Youth Leader Timothy Osadolor described the unrest as evidence of mistrust among APC leaders, noting that tensions arose when APC National Vice Chairman (North-East) Comrade Mustapha Salihu and National Chairman Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje endorsed Tinubu for 2027 without mentioning Shettima, prompting protests from delegates.
Osadolor stressed that the PDP, while pleased to see the APC’s internal disarray, remains committed to peaceful, issue-based politics and opposes violence. He accused certain APC figures of fueling tensions through reckless statements, questioning how they could undermine Shettima in his home region without expecting backlash. Osadolor expressed concern that the APC’s actions risk normalizing violence in Nigerian politics, potentially influencing the 2027 elections and public perceptions. He called on APC leaders to act responsibly, emphasizing that younger Nigerians should not view violence as an acceptable part of politics. Despite the criticism, Osadolor clarified that the PDP’s focus is on addressing national challenges like economic hardship and insecurity, not on the APC’s internal workings. He expressed hope that the APC’s ongoing confusion could benefit the opposition, stating, “We wish their confusion to continue as a party.” As political tensions rise ahead of 2027, posts on X, such as from @Naija_PR and @SaharaReporters, reflect fears of escalating electoral violence, amplifying the PDP’s call for non-violent politics.
