Nasarawa Police Launch Probe into Tragic Death of Five Children in Agyaragu

The Nasarawa State Police Commissioner, Shetima Jauro-Mohammed, has ordered a thorough investigation into the deaths of five children found lifeless inside an abandoned vehicle in Agyaragu, Obi Local Government Area, on Sunday, May 4, 2025. According to a statement issued on May 5 by Police Public Relations Officer SP Ramhan Nansel in Lafia, the children, aged between six and ten, were discovered unresponsive in a disused, unserviceable vehicle parked at the residence of Mr. Abu Agyeme.

The incident was reported at approximately 5:30 p.m. by Mr. Ozimna Ogbor, a local resident, prompting immediate action from the Agyaragu Divisional Headquarters. Police officers found the children locked inside the vehicle and rushed them to Aro Hospital, Agyaragu, where a medical doctor confirmed their deaths due to suspected suffocation. The victims, identified by the Migili Youth Association as Kamsi Onah (male, 8), Somer Onah (male, 6), Unice Udouchi (female, 10), Nmasoma Nnaji (female, 10), and Chioma Nnaji (female, 8), were released to their parents for burial due to severe heat burns on their bodies.

Commissioner Jauro-Mohammed expressed deep sorrow and extended condolences to the bereaved families, describing the incident as a “heartbreaking” reminder of a similar tragedy in Keffi in August 2019, where two children died in an abandoned vehicle. He urged parents, guardians, and vehicle owners to ensure children cannot access parked or abandoned vehicles unsupervised. The police have launched a full investigation to uncover the circumstances of the tragedy, with the community in mourning and calling for enhanced safety measures.
