South East PDP Renominates Sunday Udeh-Okoye as National Secretary Amid Party Crisis

The South East Zonal Executive Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has renominated former National Youth Leader Sunday Udeh-Okoye as the party’s National Secretary, as announced on Tuesday, May 20, 2025. Senate Minority Leader Osita Ngwu presented the resolution to the acting National Working Committee (NEWC) in Abuja, referencing efforts by party organs, including the PDP Governors’ Forum (PDP-GF), to resolve the ongoing crisis over the national secretary position. Ngwu noted that following a Supreme Court judgment, the PDP-GF met in Oyo State on April 14, 2025, and resolved that the South East Zonal Executive Committee should nominate a candidate, leading to Udeh-Okoye’s unanimous selection during a meeting on May 14 at the Enugu State Government House.

Ngwu urged the party leadership to consider the South East’s historical loyalty, having delivered all National Assembly members and governors to the PDP in the past, and to view the nomination as a step toward repositioning the party for future elections. He emphasized the zone’s desire for lasting peace to enhance electoral performance. Acting National Chairman Umar Damagum, represented by Deputy National Chairman (South) Taofeek Arapaja, received the resolution and expressed confidence in reclaiming the South East. Damagum promised to forward the recommendation to the National Executive Committee (NEC) for its May 27 meeting, urging aggrieved members to stay and resolve issues collectively. He likened the PDP to a family where differences can be addressed, asserting that the party would overcome its challenges and remain a platform for open expression.
