Zamfara Governor Dauda Lawal Attributes PDP Crisis to Collective Ego, Sees Hope for Free Elections

On Wednesday, June 18, 2025, Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal declared that the ongoing crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) stems from the egos of all its members, not solely former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, the party’s 2023 presidential candidate. Speaking at a media parley with journalists in Zamfara, Lawal emphasized that the internal conflict transcends Atiku, stating, “Everybody has their own issue; it’s not just about Atiku Abubakar; it’s beyond him.” He admitted his own contribution to the ego-driven tensions, responding affirmatively when asked if he was part of the problem, saying, “Yes.” Lawal’s remarks counter claims by some PDP members who attribute the party’s woes to President Bola Tinubu’s interference, instead pointing to a collective responsibility among PDP stakeholders.

Addressing Nigeria’s electoral process, Lawal expressed optimism about the possibility of free and fair elections, citing his own victory as evidence. “I experienced it in Zamfara State—with all the powerful people that can turn things around, with the might of the Federal Government and everything,” he said, noting his historic election as Zamfara’s first PDP governor in 2023 despite federal influence. He added, “It was a free and fair election, and I believe it will happen. It’s a matter of time.” The PDP’s crisis, marked by factionalism and suspensions, has intensified ahead of 2027, with posts on X, like @SaharaReporters, highlighting Lawal’s push for reconciliation, while @Naija_PR notes persistent divisions over leadership and zoning. Lawal’s call for introspection aligns with efforts to unify the party, but challenges remain, with 2023 election disputes and ego clashes, as seen in the North-Central’s push for a national chairman, per a June 2025 Punch report, complicating resolution.
