Atiku Abubakar Reaffirms PDP Loyalty, Pushes for Coalition to Oust APC in 2027

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has dismissed rumors of defecting to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), reaffirming his commitment to the PDP. During a meeting with women members of the party’s Board of Trustees (BoT) in Abuja on May 5, 2025, Atiku emphasized the need for a coalition to challenge the APC-led government in the 2027 elections, describing it as essential for rebuilding Nigeria.

The delegation, led by former Minister of Women Affairs and ex-National Women Leader Hajia Inna Ciroma, visited Atiku to address the PDP’s leadership crisis and prevent its collapse. Ciroma, speaking to Vanguard, expressed concern over the party’s lack of direction, stating, “As mothers and the conscience of the party, we cannot fold our arms and watch our great party deteriorate.” She confirmed that the discussions with Atiku were fruitful, covering coalition strategies, party funding, and the urgent need for leadership to stabilize the PDP.

Atiku assured the women that the coalition, inspired by the Second Republic’s NPN-NPP accord, would not affect the PDP’s identity and was being built with stakeholders across Nigeria’s political and regional divides. He clarified that the movement is driven by citizens eager to reclaim and rebuild the country, not merely a political tactic. Atiku also addressed party funding, advocating for robust financial structures to prevent control by individuals. Ciroma noted Atiku’s firm stance against leaving the PDP, reinforcing his dedication to its revival and success in 2027.
