Former Education Minister and public accountability advocate Oby Ezekwesili has vehemently denied allegations that she accepted bribes to support Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan’s sexual harassment claims against Senate President Godswill Akpabio. In a statement posted on her verified X handle on May 4, 2025, Ezekwesili dismissed the accusations leveled by UK-based activist Sandra Duru, known as Professor Mgbeke, as “baseless and laughable falsehoods.”
Duru had claimed that Akpoti-Uduaghan fabricated the allegations and that Ezekwesili was paid to endorse them. Ezekwesili, known for her anti-corruption stance, rejected the claims, stating, “No sensible person who knows my incorruptible track record is deceived by these fabrications. No amount of money can buy my convictions or stance.” She reaffirmed her unwavering support for Akpoti-Uduaghan, emphasizing that her solidarity is rooted in a commitment to justice, not financial or political motives. “We despise injustice and abuse of power. Period,” she declared, pledging continued support for Akpoti-Uduaghan’s fight against “irresponsible politicians, led by the Senate President.”
Ezekwesili called for a fair and independent investigation into the allegations against Akpabio, warning that attempts to silence or discredit Akpoti-Uduaghan would fail. She criticized Nigeria’s political class for prioritizing personal gain over public service, contrasting their mindset with her purpose-driven advocacy for a just Nigeria. “They cannot fathom sacrifice because money is their god,” she said, urging Nigerians to demand accountability.
The controversy has intensified public scrutiny of the Senate, with Akpoti-Uduaghan’s allegations, detailed in a March 25, 2025, petition, gaining traction. Ezekwesili concluded with a call to action: “Fight on, until justice is served!” Senate President Akpabio has yet to respond publicly to the renewed demands for an investigation.
